Honkai: Star Rail is a massive sci-fi adventure game that at first glance looks like another Genshin Impact, just in a different setting. This is not the first game of its kind for MiHoYo, the developers of Star Rail (even if we leave out Genshin). Prior to this, the authors supported Honkai Impact 3rd for many years and there were several other projects before it. All of them are united by one universe, so the same characters meet in them. Moreover, it will take a lot of time to figure out all the intricacies of the plot of the same HI3rd.

Journey to the stars
From the prologue, we learn a little bit about the world, but it tells the basics of the game quite well. Between these fights, we immerse in the plot in every possible way. Although, to be honest, it is in the story part that there is a balance between the narrative, the opportunity to explore the world and the need to engage in battle. In the future, you will have to return to some locations, but pointwise and in order to clear the content by 100%, but this already looks routine.
The story of Honkai: Star Rail is quite interesting, sometimes adult and sometimes light-hearted. The Chinese developers are definitely good at how to weave interesting stories into the plot.
Classic combat system
The first thing that catches your eye in Honkai: Star Rail is the turn-based combat system. Moreover, the fastest characters go first, the initiative also depends on whether you attacked first or attacked you.
The main mechanic in battles is the stamina indicator, which is available above the opponent’s HP. Each opponent has certain weaknesses, for example, to ice attacks, and with each attack, a vulnerability breaks through with the corresponding element. When stamina comes down to zero, the enemy receives additional damage. In addition, his initiative decreases. It is possible to apply and effect depending on the element that knocked down stamina.
The white bar above the health bar is stamina. The two void rangers, in the middle, have it equal to zero, which reduces their initiative in combat.
Consider the characteristics of your squad
The combat system of Honkai: Star Rail may seem extremely simple, but this is only at first. There are a huge number of nuances, and the game is clearly made so that the battles work more or less smoothly for both brute force fans and fans of building multi-stage plans.
The point is this. You stumble upon an enemy unit on the global map and decide what to do with it. You can just bypass it. You can just join the battle. Alternatively, you can pause, look at the vulnerabilities of opponents and choose a hero with the right element. Then initiate an attack with its help. This will give a small but nice bonus. Each character also has unique skills that work exclusively on the global map. Someone heals, someone imposes various debuffs on opponents, while Zele knows how to make a group invisible to opponents.
Directly in the battle itself, you need to take into account a bunch of parameters. For example, the elemental vulnerabilities of opponents. Even if you do not have characters with a fire element, you will still deal damage to enemies with the corresponding vulnerability. However, depleting the enemy by removing his stamina bar will only work for the “fiery” hero. An enemy that has lost its stamina will not be able to act for some time and it will take slightly more damage. Moreover, you will also impose certain effects on it by “breaking” the enemy’s endurance bar depending on the element. A fiery character will set the enemy on fire and an ice character will freeze him. Well, and physicist hero will make him bleed.
Heroes and their abilities
Each hero in Honkai: Star Rail has three ways to act in battle: attack with normal strikes, use special skills, and release extremely powerful ultimate abilities. Chaotic “spam” will not work – the group has five skill points divided among the entire team. Therefore, you have to alternate special attacks with normal ones in order to replenish the supply of these same points.
Ultimate abilities stand a little apart from others. With their help, you can not only inflict significant damage on the enemy, but you can also interfere with the turn order. The fact is that players can use these skills literally at any time. Let’s say you see that the enemy is about to come, the heroes didn’t have time to “knock down” his endurance, and the enemy’s attack is guaranteed to kill one of your heroes. If you have someone’s ultimate ready, then you can throw it right before the enemy attack, and hope that the damage from it is enough to get rid of the enemy.
Honkai: Star Rail generally strongly encourages such “boorish” behavior on the part of the player. The game has a myriad of different debuffs, helping to slow down or weaken the enemy. With the right approach, it can help win the battle even with a superior enemy. Well, you can also refresh yourself before the fight – this will also increase the chances of winning.
There is always something to do here
Each hero and items of his equipment have a certain number of levels. Upon reaching a certain bar, you need to spend certain resources so that the character can “break through” his ceiling, and you can pump him further. Each character has six of these “elevations” – each requires more and more resources, as well as time to pump. Just like in Genshin, you cannot just take it and level up to a certain level in Honkai: Star Rail. All leveling comes down to the level of the world that one focuses on the level of the account.
Resources for improving characters and equipment take a damn mountain. Some are obtained only by blood and sweat, while other require activities with a limited number of visits per week. In addition, all the “dungeons” with artifacts, cards for experience or resources require energy as a fee for entry, which is strictly limited and restored quite reluctantly.
Multiple game modes
As for the game modes, there is no cooperative in the “Engine”. There is also a Twisted Abyss, where you get resources for your gacha. For example, there is a full-fledged RPG mode, which offers many solid rewards. There both one-time and on a weekly basis. It is difficult to call it hard, but it requires some luck, skill and perseverance.
In fairness, it is also worth noting that Honkai: Star Rail allows you to let some particularly boring things go “by chance”. The game has an automatic battle option, so players can entrust grinding experience cards or basic resources for pumping to AI without problems. Unfortunately, this will not work everywhere, but life still allows you to simplify.
The famous gacha system
Characters in Honkai: Star Rail are mined using in-game roulette. One scroll costs 160 units of currency, ten at once – 1600, respectively. A 10x scroll usually guarantees something at least relatively good, like a four-star weapon. Special cards play the role of weapons in Star Rail.
In general, the system is painfully similar to Genshin Impact – exactly the same prices. Moreover, it seems that even the odds are the same. The fact that players need to get both weapons and characters from the banners also allows you to figure out where the legs are growing from.
